Children's Hospital Colorado has a new way to help children in need of urgent care.

It has new helicopter specially equipped for the medical needs of kids, and it's the first of its kind in the region.

Flight for Life and the hospital worked together on the new helicopter, exclusively for newborn and pediatric patients.

"It's truly a specialty unit that we know will have results in improving the health of those kids who wind up transported on it," said Kathleen Mayer, the program director of Flight for Life.

It has a bigger cabin than normal Flight for Life helicopters to accommodate the medical supplies needed for urgent pediatric care.

"{It} gives the newborn and pediatric patients not only a quick response in our teams from reaching them, where ever they are, but also reduces their out of hospital time on their trip back to the hospital," said Mayer.

Mayer basically described it as a traveling ICU.

"To be able to get a very skilled team to that baby, and have him or her travel basically this mobile neonatal intensive care unit back to definitive care is just crucial and can reduce mortality and can also reduce morbidity for those children," she said.

Children's Hospital Colorado and Flight for Life will use the helicopter for flights starting Monday.
