Buildings evacuated after gas line breaks near downtown Littleton

Xcel Energy workers clamped a broken gas line Wednesday afternoon. Nearby buildings were closed as a safety precaution.

LITTLETON — A natural gas line broke under Windermere Street on the south side of Littleton Boulevard Wednesday afternoon, according to a tweet from the Littleton Fire Department.

The broken gas line has since been clamped.

Lanes of traffic were closed in both directions as firefighters and Xcel Energy workers investigated the cause. Commuters were encouraged to avoid the area due to traffic delays.

Firefighters also checked adjacent buildings.

The Arapahoe Plaza Facility at 1610, 1690 and 1790 W. Littleton Blvd. was closed and evacuated due to the gas leak. Public services impacted included:

  • Humans Services
  • Veteran Services
  • Senior Services
  • Housing and Community Development
  • Public Assistance
  • The Arapahoe County Courts
  • Public Trustee
