BRIGHTON, Colo. — A Brighton post office was officially renamed in honor of a fallen Adams County Deputy during a special ceremony Friday afternoon.
The post office located at 90 N. 4th Ave. is now called the Detective Heath McDonald Gumm Post Office Building.
On Jan. 24, 2018, Adams County Deputy Gumm was killed while responding to a disturbance call in Thornton. He was awarded the “Distinguished Service Medal” by Adams County Sheriff’s Department in 2017 and was posthumously promoted to rank of detective. He left behind a wife and family.
"It's an honor to have a federal building named after you," said James Boxrud, a communications specialist for the U.S. Postal Service. "(It) literally takes an act of Congress, unanimous support from state’s congressional delegation is required for movement of naming bills to the floor of house and senate. Once it's passed by both, it's signed by POTUS and becomes a law. I think it is an extraordinary way to honor heroes and their self-sacrifice."
The dedication ceremony was held 1 p.m. Friday at the Brighton Armory at 300 Strong St. to honor Gumm.
