2 dead, 2 injured after speeding vehicle crashes off I-76

Two passengers died when a vehicle went airborne off Interstate 76 and hit an electrical transformer box, police said.

BRIGHTON, Colo. — Two people died and two more were injured after a driver veered off Interstate 76, went airborne and hit an electrical transformer box Thursday afternoon, according to the Brighton Police Department.

The crash happened about 2 p.m. off the I-76 frontage road between East 160th and 168th avenues. Four people were in a Chevrolet Equinox going east I-76 when the driver veered off the right side of the interstate. The vehicle went airborne, rolled over the frontage road and hit a transformer box, police said.

One of the passengers, a 26-year-old man from Aurora, died on scene. Another passenger, a 30-year-old man, later died at a hospital, police said.

The driver, a 40-year-old man, and another passenger were also taken to a hospital. Their conditions weren't known.

Police said the driver was speeding and didn't show signs of impairment. At least two people in the vehicle weren't wearing seat belts.

The Adams County Coroner's Office will release the names of the deceased victims after notification of next of kin.

The investigation into the crash is open and in the early stages, police said.
