BOULDER, Colo. — The Boulder Police chief is stepping down from her post to take a position with a federal program, the department announced Wednesday.
Maris Herold will be working for the Law Enforcement Knowledge Lab, which was launched by the Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance in April 2022 to promote fair and effective policing practice in departments across the country, according to a release.
Herold will be tasked with improving policing practices across the country in her new position, the release said. She will begin her new role on Jan. 22.
"It has been an honor and privilege to serve the Boulder community and the outstanding professionals who serve within the Boulder Police Department,” Herold said in a statement. “I will always carry with me the sacrifice and brave response to the King Soopers mass casualty event on March 20, 2021. I am humbled by the opportunity to serve my profession at a national level and continue to promote the importance of fair and effective policing.”
Herold is Boulder's first woman police chief. She has served in her current role since April 2020.
Deputy Chief Stephen Redfearn will serve as interim chief, the release said.
