Boulder County food bank loses 1,500 pounds of food in outage

Community Food Share's warehouse power shut off in the severe windstorm, causing staff to scramble to salvage as much food as they could before it spoiled.

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. — Even after a food bank that serves Boulder and Broomfield counties lost 1,500 pounds of food, including 45 gallons of milk, in the power outage – the agency is still working to help thousands of families who lost spoiled food from the April windstorm.

Staff with Community Food Share said the quick work of staff to seal up their food helped salvage the majority of it.

"We were actually able to salvage almost all of the food that was in our freezers and our refrigerators. Which we're so thankful for that because that was about $80,000 worth of food," said Kim Da Silva, the CEO of Community Food Share. "And then we went in and tested a whole bunch of our food to make sure all the temps were within range of safe food distribution."

Da Silva said many people didn't have enough notice about the power outage to store their food in containers that would keep it longer.

"The cost of living in Boulder and Broomfield counties is extremely high. And to then lose something like food, which is already costing more, it's just really detrimental to a lot of families," Da Silva said.

Da Silva said Community Food Share plan to have a mobile pantry and pantry hours at their warehouse this week for people to come pick up food. The food bank also works with 42 partner agencies that are open at different times throughout the day.
