2 children rescued from backyard of burning home

The children were able to get out safely and no one else was home at the time of the fire.

CENTENNIAL, Colo. — Dramatic body camera footage captured the rescue of two children from the backyard of a home that caught fire Sunday.

The fire was reported at a home in the 4800 block of South Gibraltar Lane in Centennial just before noon on Sunday. That's near the intersection of South Reservoir Road and East Chenango Drive.

When deputies from the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office arrived at the home, they said they saw black smoke pouring from the home and heard kids screaming and crying.

"My first thought is they were still inside," one of the deputies said in a video posted to the Sheriff's department X account. "Obviously they were terrified, had no idea what was going on."

The deputies quickly realized the children, ages 8 and 14, were in the backyard of the home but were unable to get out because the gate in the fence was blocked.

Body camera footage shows the deputies run into the neighbor's yard and tear out some of the fence posts to make a hole for the kids to escape through.

"I'm going to pass you to my buddy," one of the deputies can be heard telling a young boy as he's carried through the hole in the fence.

The South Metro Fire Department was able to extinguish the fire and no one else was home at the time.

Both deputies were treated for smoke inhalation and a firefighter was also treated for injuries.

At this time, the cause of the fire has not been determined.
