City of Aurora wants resident input on urban renewal plan

The area they're focusing on for this project is around the 13th Avenue and Fitzsimons-Colfax light rail stations.

AURORA, Colo. — It's time to revisit the urban plan in Aurora and the city wants your feedback.

The area they're focusing on is around the 13th Avenue and Fitzsimons-Colfax light rail stations.

Planning supervisor Daniel Krzyzanowski said the last time the city adopted a plan for this area was back in 2009. He said a lot has changed in 15 years, including development on Colfax, as well as the growth of the Anschutz medical and Veterans Affairs (VA) campuses.

"There's definitely some near-term development opportunities in this area as it continues to grow and develop," said Krzyzanowski. "We just want to make sure planning and zoning and transportation and everything like that is sort of aiming in the right direction."

The area Aurora city planners are looking at for this urban renewal project covers a section of the I-225 corridor, between Potomac Street and Sable Boulevard.

Aurora wants people who live, work, and shop there to take a survey about their experiences in the area. It's available online in English or Spanish.

Krzyzanowski said they want to hear what's important to residents and their families.

"We think we'll probably hear a lot about housing and housing affordability," he said. "We think we'll hear a lot about traffic and mobility and getting through their neighborhood."

Besides the online survey, there's also a public input meeting happening on Wednesday, March 6th. It'll be from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. at East Middle School (1275 Fraser St).

Once all the feedback is collected, Krzyzanowski said there should be a new draft of the plan by summer. After it goes through the city's approval process, it'll become what the city uses later on to guide public improvements.
