Passenger in custody after driver fatally shot in Aurora

Two men were found with gunshot wounds in a vehicle at Heather Gardens after a reported crash in Aurora late Thursday.

AURORA, Colo. — A man who was a passenger in a vehicle is in custody after the driver of their vehicle was fatally shot, according the Aurora Police Department (APD).

Officers initially went to the 13600 block of East Bates Avenue, in the Heather Gardens neighborhood, around 10:50 p.m. Thursday for a report of a crash. They found two men with gunshot wounds inside a crashed Toyota Camry.

The driver, a 21-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, a 47-year-old man, was taken to the hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound. He's currently in police custody at the hospital, according to APD.

Investigators think the driver and the passenger were driving down the street when a gun the passenger was holding went off. Charges are pending further investigation.
