ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. — A barn fire killed multiple animals Tuesday morning northeast of Brighton, according to a spokesperson for Brighton Fire Rescue.
Brighton Fire and South Adams County Fire Department responded to the fire Tuesday morning at a barn at 35600 Almstead St. Three goats and three pigs were killed in the fire, while many chickens escaped.
Firefighters said the homeowners were not home during the fire, and it was neighbors who reported it. No injuries to people were reported.
The cause is under investigation, but the fire may have been sparked by heat lamps keeping the animals warm, according to Brighton Fire.
"We advise people to keep heat lamps away from combustible materials such as hay, straw, or wood," Brighton Fire said. "Also, secure heat lamps where animals cannot knock them over. This time of year, when temperatures drop, we always see fire caused by heat lamps."
Firefighters also ask people to keep an area mowed short around all structures to prevent a grass or brush fire from easily spreading.
"This fire did extend to a grass area but our crews were able to extinguish; we are thankful the winds were not high today which helped contain the fire to a small area," Brighton Fire said.
This is the third barn fire in the past month.
On Nov. 27, crews from the Franktown Fire Protection District responded to a smoke alarm in a horse barn near North Russellville Road and Colorado State Highway 83. When crews arrived just before 4 a.m., they found the barn fully engulfed. Numerous horses passed away in the fire, and one person was taken to the hospital, according to Franktown Fire.
On Dec. 4, crews from South Metro Fire Rescue and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office responded to a barn fire at 9480 Patty Lane in Douglas County. No injuries were reported from that fire.
