COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - About 10,000 immigrants in the country illegally have signed up to get Colorado driver's licenses when they become available next month.

The Gazette reported Wednesday that the state has added four full-time employees and 13 temporary employees to keep up with demand.

A law passed last year allows people who don't have a Social Security number to obtain a driver's license if they live in Colorado starting Aug. 1.

The applicants are making appointments to bring their identification documents to a motor vehicle office. A series of workshops are planned in the coming weeks to explain the process, including which documents are acceptable.

The state says the program will be funded by fees paid by the applicants. Driver's licenses cost $50.50 each and identification cards are $14.
