KUSA - Over the past year, there has been heightened tension between law enforcement and citizens, but some Centennial residents wanted to put all that aside just to say "thanks" on "National Thank a Police Officer Day."

Diane Lewis organized a get-together with her neighbors to thank law enforcement officers in her community.

Logan Vonhoff, 2, rode up to the party on his motorized tricycle with the words "traffic patrol" on the front.

"You have a police motorcycle? I don't even have a police motorcycle. That is so cool," Deputy D. Wade told Logan.

After showing off his stuff to some Arapahoe County Sheriff's deputies, the junior cop wanted to thank the real ones. He passed out small blue bags of snacks to all the law enforcement officers.

It's a small gesture, but Deputy Scott Gricks said it makes him feel important.

"With all the negative stuff that's been going on, it's been really nice to see the community come together with law enforcement," he said.

"It is so awesome just to be able to let them know that they're the good guys," Lewis said.

It was an opportunity to share some food, laughs and a little friendly competition between neighborhood kids for some sheriff's department swag.

"Nice work guys," said a deputy as he handed out lanyards.

Lewis said the men and women serve the community day in and day out and is glad to put a smiles on their faces.

"I hope it makes them feel appreciated," she said.

"Thank a Police Officer Day" was created in 2012 by a Chicago-based law firm to help cast a more positive light on officers.
