DENVER — After more than 10 years, Mutiny Information Café is leaving Denver for better opportunities in another city.
The fan favorite comic and coffee shop will close their current location along 2 S. Broadway and are moving less than 5 miles down the road to 3483 S. Broadway in Englewood.
"Our current building is for sale and we are priced out of staying,” the shop said in its announcement.
The shop will have a new name at their new location -- Mutiny Comics and Coffee. The space in Englewood will be slightly smaller than their current location, but co-owner Matt Megyesi said the space will have new AC, floors, and better parking for customers.
"We feel like it's right to move. We feel like we're doing the best that we can in this space, and we were doing much better than a couple of years ago, but inflation is hitting us, labor costs are hitting us, rent is going up and we don't see the neighborhood growing in the direction we wanted it to go," said Megyesi.
Since being at the Denver location, the shop has gone through a rough patch.
First there was the pandemic, and then Megyesi said he had a series of strokes and a heart attack that put him in a coma. Back in 2022, the City of Denver seized the building because they owed $31,330 in back taxes.
In less than 24 hours, the community donated enough to cover the taxes. And in 3 days, they raised more than $57,000 through a GoFundMe.
“We’ve looked at the numbers, we’ve looked at the times when we were doing really great and how well we did this summer, but coming up on October, November, which is our toughest months, I don’t see us surviving through that," said Megyesi. "So, I’m looking forward to meeting new customers and expanding the business further down there."
Mutiny Information Café will close its Broadway location on September 22 and the company will have the new location open by October 4.
