ASPEN, Colo. (AP) - City officials say a 50-foot-deep double-basement excavation in Aspen is going well, but it could be the last of its kind.
The Aspen Daily News reports that the City Council last year banned new residential contracts from including more than one 15-foot-deep basement level.
Officials were alarmed by developers applying for permission to build two stories of underground space. They fear the projects are disruptive to neighbors and use too many resources.
Commercial projects will still be allowed to dig two or more stories underground.
The current double-basement excavation is for a residential complex on East Hyman Avenue owned by 201 EH Investments of Los Angeles. The owner applied for a permit before the ban on deep basements.
The complex will feature a basketball court on the deepest level.
