2nd student injured by CSU lightning strike dies from injuries

FORT COLLINS - The second student injured by a lightning strike on the Colorado State University campus has died from his injuries, authorities said Wednesday.

A CSU spokesperson confirms that 33-year-old Marc Vernon Richard died at Poudre Valley Hospital on Wednesday. He was a graduate assistant in the Psychology Department.

Richard spent six days in the intensive care unit before he succumbed to his injuries. His family followed through on his wish to donate his organs.

The lightning strike happened around 7:30 p.m. on July 24 in an area called Sherwood Forest which is south of the Forestry Building, according to a CSU spokesperson.

The lightning also hit 35-year-old William John Szlemko, a Ph.D. student in the Psychology Department. He was pronounced dead just after the strike.

CSU says it's believed Szlemko and Richard were practicing martial arts when the storm rolled in.

Authorities believe the lightning struck the tree above the two.

A memorial service for Szlemko was held on Tuesday night at CSU. About 100 students and teachers came to the service and remembered him for his smile and love of teaching.
