KERSEY - The two people who died in a single-engine propeller plane crash near Kersey Wednesday afternoon have been identified.

Richard LaCourse, 65, of Denver and John Burk, 79, of Aurora died around 2 p.m. near the intersection of County Road 50 and County Road 53.

The aircraft was an experimental Wheeler Express, according to the FAA. SKY9 flew over the scene shortly after the incident. Aerial footage showed a large debris field and charred grass where the plane hit the ground.

A man who heard the plane go down rushed to the wreckage and tried to put the fire out before emergency crews arrived.

It's not yet known where the plane took off from or what caused the aircraft do go down. The Platte Valley Fire Department said the sun was out and winds were calm in the area at the time of the crash.

Both the FAA and the NTSB will investigate.
