DURANGO – Two people were killed when a small plane crashed near La Plata County Airport, the Durango Fire and Rescue Authority confirms.
The crash happened at about 9:30 a.m. Friday morning just north of the airport on County Road 309A.
Firefighters say two people were aboard when it happened, and no one survived. The plane has been identified as a P51.
One of the victims was identified as Mike Schlarb, a flight instructor.
County Road 309A will be closed indefinitely due to road damage.
Airport Director Kip Turner says the airport will stay open with no expected closures.
