DENVER - Two suspects are in custody and an officer is recovering from minor injuries after a home-invasion robbery led a responding officer to shoot at a dog.

It happened in Denver around 2 p.m. in the 1500 block of Wabash Street off East Colfax Avenue.

Police say the pit bull mix came after officers from down the block as officers were taking the suspects into custody.

Megan Rutherford, the owner of the 8-month-old pit bull mix named Giant, says the dog was at her brother-in-law's home while he was on vacation.

Rutherford doesn't believe Giant would have attacked.

"My dog wasn't going to bite anyone, never has never will," Rutherford said. "It's heartbreaking to see my dog taken away."

At least two shots were fired. The dog was not hit. During all of this, one of the officers fell back and injured his head.

The dog was removed by animal control. Rutherford says animal control officers will conduct an evaluation on Giant to determine if he shows aggressive behavior.

The suspects in the home invasion - a male and female - are accused of assaulting a man inside the home.

Police are not releasing a lot of details as they sort out what happened.
