BROOMFIELD, Colo. — Demolition work began this week on Broomfield's 1stBank Center, nearly a year after it closed for good.
According to the City of Broomfield's website, demolition on the arena near the Wadsworth Parkway and US 36 interchange began on Monday. Most of the materials that cannot be recycled, such as insulation, drywall and the roof, will be removed early in the project. The heavier, recyclable materials such as asphalt and concrete will be removed last.
The building demolition will generally be from south/southeast to west, the city said, with the westernmost section of the building being demolished last. Saving the west side for last will provide a screen and sound buffering for residents and businesses near the building.
Demolition is expected to take six months, according to the city, and will take place Monday through Friday and some Saturdays.
In May 2023, the Broomfield Urban Renewal Authority's Board of Directors voted to close the facility for good on Nov. 30 of that year.
Broomfield City Council said the 6,500-seat event center never reached its full potential in hosting sporting events, concerts and other events since opening in late 2006.
The former Broomfield Event Center never made a profit, city council members said. They also cited the costs associated with having police and paramedics staff the events.
The city's website provides a live video feed of the demolition.
