DENVER - One person was injured in a fire in the 2400 block of Welton Street in the Five Points neighborhood in Denver Thursday morning.
The man taken to the hospital is being treated for smoke inhalation and is in serious condition.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Fire crews had to punch a hole in the roof of the building to help fight the fire, which started around 4:30 a.m. It took firefighters until 6:45 a.m. to extinguish the fire.
Fire officials said 11 people are displaced due to the fire. One man who escaped fire said the smoke was so thick, he couldn't see anything.
9NEWS Reporter TaRhonda Thomas said this building is used as a somewhat homeless shelter by a Catholic charity, so many residents are concerned where they will stay. The Red Cross said they are assisting these residents.
RTD's D line service to Downing Street was not operating due to the fire, but is back up and running as of 9 a.m.
