Officer disciplined for wearing police uniform on vacation day to get through airport security

The incident has been characterized in city records as a “security breach” because the officer was also armed as she entered the concourse.

DENVER — A police officer was recently fined a couple of days' pay for using her police powers and uniform to escort her parents through airport security.

The incident happened Nov. 20, 2023, but the information only recently become public because the officer was disciplined in September, according to City of Denver discipline records.

The documents describe how Denver Police Officer Kerri Misiano wore her full police uniform, including her firearm, with the goal of escorting her parents to their gate. As they were going through TSA security, a supervisor approached.

“I said, 'I’m not a DIA officer. I’m a regular DPD officer. I was just wondering if I could walk my parents to their gate,'” Misiano is quoted in the discipline records.

The records say Misiano “was on an approved vacation day off and was not scheduled to perform any off-duty work.”

After the TSA supervisor let her family pass, eventually other officers responded to Masiano on the concourse and informed her she didn’t have approval to be there.

“Her doing so demonstrated a severe lack of judgment. Officer Misiano’s actions constitute conduct unbecoming of an officer because she used her appearance as an on-duty officer to gain access to the secured areas of DEN, resulting in a security breach, and she introduced a firearm into the concourse,” the discipline documents read.

Ultimately, the city’s Chief Compliance Officer gave Masiano “two (2) fined days” for the violation of conduct prejudicial.
