BOULDER, Colo. — The same man now suspected of shooting two people in Boulder – one last week and the other on Wednesday – pled guilty just last year to a bizarre series of crimes that involved him, on two occasions, brandishing a machete in 2021.

John Paul Gaudreau, 35, remains in the Boulder County Jail on suspicion of, among other things, two counts of attempted murder.

Police arrested Gaudreau shortly before noon on Wednesday after investigating the shooting of a man earlier in the day. After “following up on several leads,” according to a Boulder Police news release, investigators said they tied Gaudreau to a shooting of another man near the 1600 block of 28th Street on June 28.

Both victims survived.

In 2021, Boulder Police said Gaudreau threatened a man with a machete after the man came across Gaudreau hiding in bushes. Hours later, police said, Gaudreau pulled the same machete on two people after burglarizing a home.

A spokesperson for the Boulder County District Attorney told 9NEWS Investigates Gaudreau “was accepted by, and sentenced to, the Adult Integrated Treatment Court” after pleading guilty to his involvement in the two crimes.

“It is a highly intensive program and it appears that the defendant did well for a lengthy period of time. The defendant complied with probation and court supervision, including being tested and actively monitored for drugs, and showed for his court appearances as required,” read a written statement from the DA’s office.

In May of this year, however, Boulder Police arrested Gaudreau on a misdemeanor criminal mischief and harassment case. “Defendant was released on a $1,000 personal recognizance bond,” according to court records.

He was set to be back in court on July 25 on that case for arraignment.

Gaudreau was set to make his first court appearance on the attempted murder cases Friday afternoon.

Court records show Gaudreau's criminal history dates back to 2006. In 2021, his "history included 36 arrests" on offenses that included:

  • Felony menacing
  • Menacing
  • Third-degree assault
  • Domestic violence
  • Burglary
  • ID theft
  • Escape
  • Drug possession
