The difference between the two types of flu shots

It’s almost flu season, and this year, you have more than one option to fight back.

There are two different flu shots available. One is considered a “normal” dose, which doctors recommend for anyone older than six months. This would be the right option for kids, teens and middle-aged adults.

The other shot is just a higher dose of the same vaccine.

Doctors say this is a good option for older adults, since oftentimes, their immune systems aren’t quite as strong.

Regardless of which shot you choose, doctors say it’s important to make sure your family gets vaccinated.

“It will never give you the flu, it doesn’t work that way,” Dr. Daniel McGee, a pediatrician at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan told NBC News. “You can get muscle aches and a little bit of fever after the flu shot, but that just means it’s working. That doesn’t mean it’s giving you the flu.”

This year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that doctors stop providing the nasal flu mist.

They say it simply wasn’t effective in fighting the virus last year.
