Lower back pain points

Why do we always feel it in our lower back? | PAID CONTENT

DENVER — We talked to neurosurgeon Dr. Mark Robinson to get his perspective.

Q.  How common is back pain?

A.   Almost everyone experiences back pain at some point in their lifetime.  Especially as we age, our back typically degenerates at a normal rate.  It’s very common to have arthritis develop over time and so back pain is the second most common reason to visit a primary care physician.

Q. Why do you think back pain is so common?

A.  We lead very active lifestyles here in Colorado. The lumbar spine in particular, which is the lower part of your back carries the load of your torso and your body and so these joints and discs wear out over time....causing back and leg pain as well.

Q.  What are the most common causes of back pain?

A.  Arthritis develops in the lower back as we age....from the disc or spinal joints as they degenerates.   The good news is that a lot of pain can go away on its own.  Physical therapy, stretching and rest can alleviate 90% of symptoms.

Q.  When is it time to get surgery?

A.  Surgery isn’t always the option,  but when you have weakness or prolonged pain and other therapies aren’t working, it’s reasonable to talk to a surgeon and talk about your options.
