DENVER — We chat with Dr. Jared Foran about hip pain...turns out, it's really common!
Q. What got you into orthopedics?
A. It sounds cliché but most doctors would say they like helping people. I also really enjoy working with my hands...orthopedics is a field where you see a problem and you can go in and fix it. That was a perfect marriage for me.
Q. What starts to happen in the hip joint that causes pain?
A. Arthritis can develop and degenerate in the cartilage. Most people think the pain is felt in the lower back or in the buttocks...but those are less common areas to feel pain. Most of the time the pain in felt in your groin, thigh and into your knee.
Q. What can we do to treat hip pain and prevent hip replacement?
A. You should do everything you can before considering hip replacement. Simple things like weight loss and low impact exercise can do a lot. Over the counter medications can also work and if you have a mobility assistance device like a cane, that can be a great help. Sometimes injections are a possibility.
Q. When is it time to consider hip replacement surgery?
A. When you’ve exhausted all other options, and your quality of life is suffering, it may be time to consider hip replacement.
Q. What is recovery like after surgery?
A. Hip replacement recovery has gotten so much better over the years. People had to stay in the hospital 3-7 days; now most people can go home the same day...Putting full weight on it right away, using a walker or cane.... and week after week getting better and back to the things they love to do.
