DENVER — Two East High School (EHS) students have been self-quarantined after having contact with someone who has tested positive for coronavirus, according to a letter sent to EHS families.

The letter from Principal John Youngquist says the school was notified at around 7 p.m. Friday by an EHS family that they had been in contact with one of the people in Colorado who had tested presumptive positive for the virus that causes COVID-19. The family has two students who attend EHS, according to the letter.

The family said after consulting their physician, they decided to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines and self-quarantine the two students for the next seven to 14 days as a precaution, according to the letter. The family said the students would not be attending any classes or events at EHS during that time. They also shared that both students are healthy and are not showing any symptoms of the virus, the letter says.

Youngquist emphasized in the letter that no EHS students or staff have tested positive for the virus, and said Denver Public Schools (DPS) leadership had been notified to ensure the school was taking the right steps to keep the community informed and healthy. DPS then contacted the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) to share information and get guidance, the letter says.

The letter says health officials have advised that all school activities can continue as scheduled and that there is a low risk of the virus spreading. Officials told the school to ensure the entire campus gets a deep and thorough cleaning, with "special and extra steps" taken to disinfect the auditorium for a drama production Saturday night.

Eight people in five Colorado counties have tested presumptive positive for the virus, according to CDPHE. There have been 208 negative tests.
