Coca-Cola discontinuing one of its 'permanent' flavors after just months

Just months after Coca-Cola revealed its first new "permanent" flavor in years, that flavor is going away.

WASHINGTON — Coca-Cola is pulling the plug on its newest "permanent" flavor after just seven months.

The Atlanta beverage giant confirmed Tuesday that Coca-Cola Spiced is getting discontinued.

"We're always looking at what our consumers like and adjusting our range of products. As part of this strategy, we're planning to phase out Coca-Cola Spiced to introduce an exciting new flavor in 2025," a Coca-Cola Company spokesperson said in a statement.

The end of Coca-Cola Spiced is particularly noteworthy because it was introduced in February 2024 as the company's first new permanent offering to its North American portfolio in three years.

The company on Tuesday did not provide any reason for the change or any details about what flavor could be taking its place in the lineup next year.

Earlier this year, Coca-Cola’s North American marketing chief Shakir Moin told The Associated Press it usually takes them at least a year to develop a new beverage, he said, but Coca-Cola Spiced took just seven weeks. Moin added at the time that the company hopes to replicate that speed with future new products, noting that the market is moving forward faster and they need to be faster than the speed of the market.

An Associated Press review of Coca-Cola Spiced described the "spices" as tasting like "amped-up versions of the spices in regular Coke."

The company also occasionally introduces limited edition flavors. Recently, Coca-Cola and OREO teamed up for OREO flavored Coke Zero and OREO Coca-Cola cookies. Unlike Coca-Cola Spiced, both of those offerings debuted as limited-edition from the start.
