Ex-Lakewood cop facing sex charges in Denver arrested again in Lakewood

Randall Butler was arrested and charged with sex crimes in Denver in early December. A month later, Lakewood Police said they've arrested Butler on suspicion of attempted sex assault.

A former Lakewood Police Department agent arrested in early December on sex assault charges has now been arrested in Lakewood on suspicion of attempted sexual assault, according to law enforcement. He has not been formally charged as of this writing.

Randall Butler, 37, was first arrested in Denver on Dec. 5, 2018, after reportedly sexually assaulting a woman he offered to give a ride home in November.

When Lakewood PD first heard of the allegations against Butler in Denver, they placed the officer on administrative leave, police said. He later resigned. According to Lakewood police, he'd been with the department since 2013.

He was out on bond before his run-in with Lakewood PD.

Butler was arrested Tuesday around 7 p.m. on suspicion of attempted sexual assault and other crimes, Lakewood police said. He is believed to have engaged in unlawful sexual contact with a woman he'd offered a ride to back in June, police said - separate from the November incident.

The victim in the case originally said she did not want to come forward, according to an arrest warrant affidavit for Butler provided by the First Judicial District Attorney's Office provided to 9NEWS. She told investigators from the Arvada Police Department and Lakewood PD that she was a felon and thought no one would believe her. 

After news broke of Butler's arrest, an Arvada PD detective she kept in touch with encouraged her to come forward after months of trying to get her to report the incident, according to the affidavit.

According to the affidavit, the victim said Butler first met her and her coworkers at a business on West 6th Avenue when an alarm was going off. As she went to walk home -- it was around 7 p.m. on a Friday -- he pulled up next to her and offered her a ride to a nearby bus stop so she didn't have to walk, she told investigators.

The report says she said she was put in the back and throughout the ride, he made inappropriate comments to her. When he opened the door of the back to let her out, she reportedly had to push past him to get away. According to the arrest warrant, he grabbed her inappropriately and said inappropriate things.

Detectives with the department said he is being held on suspicion of criminal attempt sex assault, unlawful sexual contact, first-degree official misconduct and official oppression.
