El Charro de Corazn reappears in Denver

DENVER - Once again, as it happens every January, thousands of friends of the Mexican Rodeo filled the Denver Coliseum to see a new performance by Gerardo Jerry Diaz, El Charro de Corazn (The Charro from the Heart).

Diaz was invited seven years ago to bring his act to Denver, after former NWSS general manager Chuck Sylvester saw Diaz performing in Texas. Two years later, the Mexican Rodeo Extravaganza became a separate presentation on the first Saturday night at the NWSS. And soon, a second presentation was added on Sunday. (Sylvester retired last year, after 25 years with the NWSS.)

The Mexican Rodeo Extravaganza also features popular Mexican recording artists and Mariachis, along with a choreographed presentation of Mexican bull fighting (no animals are hurt), bronc riding, bull riding, trick roping, dancing horses, clown, Aztec dancers, and Mexican dances.

Every year, Diaz and his team also present the daring Paso de la Muerte, or Death Jump, when a rider jumps from one horse to another, while the horses are running, and without using saddles or ropes.

Diaz, 43, is a true Charro. He produces the Mexican Rodeo Extravaganza and presents his show all over the United States to preserve and to teach the rich tradition of the Mexican Charros. His wife, Staci, is also part of the show.

He started more than 20 years ago, and he received his tradition from his own father, Don Jose Diaz, now 80-years-old. Jose Diaz trained horses in Guadalajara, Mexico for the family of President Lazaro Cardenas. He later joined the Barnum Baily Circus.

Last year, Jose Diaz fell from his horse during his presentation in Denver. He came back to the arena later during the same performance to show the public he was not hurt. Since then, Jerry Diaz decided his father will ride with him or in a carriage, but not alone.

Jerry Diaz said he is proud of two of his horses, Cerrano and Osado. Cerrano is a nine-year old horse he bought five years ago. Osado, a 10-year-old horse gray stallion, has been performing with Diaz since 2000.

In addition to the Mexican Rodeo Extravaganza, the 98th NWSS offers 39 other special events, including the rodeo competitions. For tickets and schedule information, visit the National Western Stock Show web site.
