Wyoming man arrested in Colorado on charges including felony kidnapping, assault

The Larimer County Sheriff's Office said Derrick Richie, 35, was arrested in Wellington on Thursday.

LARIMER COUNTY, Colo. — A man from Wyoming was arrested Thursday in Colorado on multiple charges, including felony kidnapping and assault, the Larimer County Sheriff's Office said Friday.

Around 5 p.m. Thursday, dispatch received a call from someone who said they saw a woman "waving her hands and yelling for help" inside a white Cadillac, according to a release from the sheriff's office.

The car was reportedly speeding on southbound Interstate 25 near Wellington, Colorado.

A sergeant with the sheriff's office was able to locate the car in Wellington and tried to stop it, but the driver was uncooperative and drove away. Deputies then made a "high-risk" traffic stop after blocking the car on the I-25 overpass at the Cleveland Avenue exit, the sheriff's office said.

A woman and the driver got out of the car, leaving two children inside, the release said. The sheriff's office identified the driver as 35-year-old Derrick Richie, originally from Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Richie was "uncooperative and fought with deputies," the sheriff's office said, but was eventually taken into custody safely without any deputy getting injured.

The woman was treated for minor injuries.

Richie was medically cleared before being booked into the Larimer County Jail Thursday night on the following charges:

  • Three counts of second-degree kidnapping - felony
  • First-degree assault - felony
  • Third-degree assault
  • Two counts of child abuse - knowingly or recklessly
  • Drove while under the influence of drugs
  • Domestic violence

The Larimer County Court issued Richie a $20,000 surety bond.
