LAKEWOOD, Colo. — Lakewood police credit community members for helping stop a suspect after a deadly hit-and-run crash Saturday night.
Police said the crash happened in the area of West Jewell Avenue and Iliff Avenue. When officers arrived on scene, police said, they were flagged down by good Samaritans who held onto the suspect to keep him from running away.
Police credit their quick thinking for taking the suspect into custody.
"While we do not recommend this type of justice, we do appreciate the citizens who were there to help us," police said on social media.
"It’s also tough because they’re putting themselves in danger and in harm’s way as well," Detective Garrett Boyd with Lakewood Police said. "So while we appreciated that they helped and they didn’t let someone get away with that, they could have put themselves in a horrible situation, just because you don’t know what someone’s gonna do to try to get away."
Police said one person was killed in the crash. Their name has not yet been released.
Police said the suspect, a 29-year-old man, was jailed on charges of vehicular homicide, DUI, leaving the scene of an accident, driving under restraint and no proof of insurance.
