Vandal shatters nativity scene at Globeville church

Days after Christmas, a vandal shattered the nativity scene outside a church in Denver's Globeville neighborhood.

Father Stanislaw Michalek is praying for whoever shattered the nativity scene outside of St. Joseph Polish Catholic Church in the Globeville neighborhood late Thursday night or early Friday morning.

“It’s been here for many years and nothing happened,” Michalek said.

The church is located at 517 East 46th Avenue – near Interstate 70 and Washington Street. Remnants of the nativity scene, including baby Jesus, were scattered in front of the building Friday evening.

Michalek said a live nativity is planned for next weekend, and that he will likely buy a new ceramic one before next Christmas.

“That was a nice nativity scene,” Michalek said.

He said he discovered the vandalism when he got to church and initially thought it was garbage scattered around the adjoining school.

Instead, it turned out to be something far more valuable. But, Michalek said he’s not angry. Instead, he just hopes that whoever did this finds peace.

“I’d just tell him that God loves him,” Michalek said. “Christmas is all about love. God loves us so much.”
