COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — During a hearing Monday attorneys for the man accused of fatally shooting two people inside a dorm at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs last month expressed concerns about the suspect's mental competency.
Nicholas Jordan, 25, is being held on a $5 million cash-only bond in connection with the killings of Celie Rain Montgomery, 26, and Samuel Knopp, 24.
According to an arrest affidavit from Colorado Springs Police, Jordan, and Knopp lived with another roommate in the dormitory pod with four bedrooms and a common area in Crestone House. The third roommate is the one who reported the shooting to police just before 6 a.m. on Feb. 16.
The roommate said that he and Knopp believed Jordan had recently vacated his room in the pod following a significant number of complaints about Jordan smoking marijuana and cigarettes and the cleanliness of his living area. When police searched the dorm pod, they noticed that Jordan's room and another vacant room did not appear to have any personal belongings.
Jordan appeared in El Paso County District Court Monday where his defense attorneys questioned his ability to assist them with his defense.
As a result, El Paso County Judge David Shakes approved a request to have Jordan evaluated by a psychologist at the Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Pueblo. That could happen sometime in the next month.
Jordan is next due in court for a review hearing on April 12.
