COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Colorado Springs Police are investigating after two people were found shot dead in a dorm room Friday morning at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS).
A shelter-in-place order for the university's campus issued Friday morning has been lifted.
Police said in an update on Friday that public safety received a report of shots fired just before 6 a.m. inside a dorm room.
At 6:05 am., officers were able to get inside the room and found two people, both with at least one gunshot wound, who were dead. Police said Friday evening that the shooting did not appear to be a murder-suicide and that both deaths were being investigated as homicides.
UCCS Public Safety posted at 7:02 a.m. that a lockdown was in place at the campus located at 1420 Austin Bluffs Pkwy.
About eight minutes later, authorities said there was no active shooter but asked people on campus to continue sheltering in place until further notice. They also said campus would be closed for the day.
"My heart is overcome by grief as unspeakable violence has reached into our home. It is with the utmost sadness that I write to you about an isolated shooting incident that took place early this morning on our campus," Chancellor Jennifer Sobanet said in a statement.
"We are in shock as we process this tragic loss of two lives. I know that all of our campus community is joining me in sending our love and support to the victims and their friends and family in this time of tragedy."
Just before 8 a.m., authorities said the shelter-in-order was reduced to just Alpine Village and that anyone in other areas were allowed to leave campus. Public safety also asked people to limit their movements on campus.
Police are investigating the shooting as an isolated incident, and at this time they do not believe there is a danger to the public.
Students at the university said they're tired of seeing college campuses turn into crime scenes.
“We are just college kids here trying to go to school, trying to go to our jobs,” said Kailey Spurlock, a freshman at UCCS. “There are no words to describe that feeling. It just hits you immediately. Like you don’t know what to do.”
Julia Sanchez Busby, another UCCS freshman, said she was comforted by her friends' texts saying they were safe.
“Just a lot of 'I love you’s,'” Sanchez said.
Both students said they feel safe on campus.
“That’s why I think a lot of people were shocked, because the whole year I’ve been here, the worst we’ve had is like, bikes stolen,” Spurlock said.
“It’s really frustrating because you don’t want these things to be happening, and you wish it would stop,” Sanchez Busby said. “And everyone around you is rooting for it to stop, yet it’s still happening. It’s more frustrating than anything.”
