Thornton Walmart shooting suspect is competent to stand trial

The man accused of murdering three people inside a Thornton Walmart in November is competent to stand trial, according to a report from the state hospital.

KUSA — Adams County District Judge Mark Warner found Scott Ostrem competent to stand trial for first-degree murder and attempted murder based on an evaluation done at the Colorado Mental Health Institute in Pueblo.

On Monday morning Ostrem's lawyers confirmed that they had read the report of competency and said they would not contest the report.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday, June 8.

Ostrem, 48, is accused of “nonchalantly” walking into the Walmart at 9901 Grant Street the night of Nov. 1 and opening fire on a group of people standing near the front of the store.

Pamela Marques, 52, Carlos Moreno, 66, and Victor Vasquez, 26, were all killed.

Ostrem is charged with three counts of first-degree murder after deliberation, three counts of first-degree murder with extreme indifference and 30 counts of attempt to commit first-degree murder with extreme indifference and one count of crime of violence, a sentencing enhancer. In all, Ostrem is charged with 37 counts.
