A teen accused in the stabbing death of a 20-year-old woman will be tried in district court as an adult, according to court documents that were filed Friday and sent to 9NEWS.
Aiden Von Grabow, 15 at the time of the killing, is accused of stabbing Longmont resident Makayla Grote to death last November. The judge in the case has been hearing testimony all week on whether or not Von Grabow should be tried as an adult.
Note: 9NEWS had previously elected not to name the suspect as he was being tried as a juvenile. We are now naming him since he will be tried as an adult.
Citing the seriousness of the offense, the low level of security at juvenile facilities, Von Grabow's threats to escape secured facilities, his previous mischievous behavior and his struggle with mental illness as reasons - Judge Andrew Macdonald ordered the teen be tried as an adult.
Testimony leading up to this decision detailed the child's "kill list," which was a list of names, including some of his friends, and descriptions of how he'd murder them. Von Grabow even threatened Grote's younger sister.
“Torture till she begs for mercy,” the note read, according to testimony from Longmont Police Detective Brian Dean. “Make her fight, then take hostage.”
9NEWS is not naming Grote’s younger sister because she is considered a victim of harassment herself.
It was not made clear the number of names on the kill list.
Court testimony from a police officer said Von Grabow's mother called police days before the attack on Grote saying he'd kicked in a door and came at her with a knife.
She also allegedly told investigators her son had a bunch of weapons, including Molotov cocktails and a machete. That was just a day before the teen allegedly killed Grote.
