AURORA, Colo. — An Aurora officer fired his weapon Wednesday morning at a teen who was spotted in a car that was taken at gunpoint from Colorado Springs Tuesday night, a spokesperson for the Aurora Police Department (APD) said.
The teen was not hit by the gunfire, but was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries, according to McCoy. No other injuries were reported.
Officers were initially called to the area of East Tennessee Place and East Tennessee Drive, around 8:30 a.m. for a report of a suspicious vehicle, McCoy said.
The East Tennessee Place and East Tennessee Drive intersection is just east of the East Mississippi Avenue and South Buckley Road intersection.
"The 911 caller advised that there [were] two juvenile females and a juvenile male associated with a maroon Honda CRV in the area," said APD spokesperson Crystal McCoy. "They were checking out homes and they believed they could be potentially casing the homes or committing burglaries."
As officers arrived at the scene, they learned that the Honda CRV was stolen in a carjacking Tuesday night in Colorado Springs, McCoy said. According to a report from Colorado Springs Police (CSPD), the victim said three young males took her car at gunpoint from the area of East Kiowa and North Logan Avenue around 7 p.m.
Wednesday morning, an APD officer confronted a juvenile male suspect inside that stolen vehicle, according to McCoy. During that confrontation, the officer discharged his weapon, but the teen was not hit.
He was, however, taken to the hospital as a precaution for treatment of minor injuries, McCoy said. She did not say how he was injured.
The two juvenile females have not been located. McCoy said they believe all three teens are 15 years old.
A gun was recovered inside the CRV, but McCoy said they're still investigating whether the suspects fired any shots. APD said there was no threat to the community.
APD said they're still investigating whether these teens were involved in Tuesday's incident in Colorado Springs.
"We don't know if the juveniles involved today were in fact involved with the carjacking," McCoy said. "But we do know this vehicle today that was reported by a watchful neighbor, fortunately, was involved in a carjacking, a violent crime in Colorado Springs yesterday."
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information is asked to call Agent Sutherland with APD at 303-627-3100.
