Lutheran Medical Center back to normal operations after suspicious box determined to be empty

The hospital went on lockdown Wednesday after an earlier report of a suspicious package outside the building.

WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. — Wheat Ridge police officers have cleared the scene at Lutheran Medical Center in JeffCo Wednesday after investigating a report of a suspicious package left in front of the hospital, according to a tweet from the department.

A spokesperson for Wheat Ridge PD said the hospital was not evacuated during the investigation, but people were being cleared from the front of the campus. 

A tweet from the hospital around 1:30 p.m. said the campus had gone on lockdown and that ER patients were being diverted while the investigation continued. Less than an hour later, police determined the the suspicious box was empty. Police cleared the scene and the hospital has since returned to normal operations. 

Jefferson County Bomb Squad members helped investigate the package at 38th Avenue and 32nd Avenue (Lutheran Medical spans the area between those two avenues).

Law enforcement asked people to avoid the area around the hospital while the investigation was underway.
