LAFAYETTE, Colo. — Suspects in a getaway vehicle fired shots at police following reports of vehicle break-ins near Rock Creek Farm early Tuesday morning, according to the Lafeyette Police Department (LPD).
The suspects have since been taken into custody.
LPD officers responded to the 600 block of South Lafayette Drive after witnesses reported seeing several people breaking into parked cars in the area shortly after 4 a.m.
One witness who saw the activity began following the suspects' vehicle, and LPD said shots were fired at the witness vehicle. The witness was able to flag down patrol officers near US Highway 287, who located the suspects' vehicle. Shots were also fired at the patrol officers' vehicles, LPD said.
The suspect vehicles' driver, later identified as 22-year-old Jacob Lopez, pulled the vehicle over along Highway 287 just north of Dillon Road, at which time three of the four suspects inside fled on foot, LPD said.
A female passenger remained in the vehicle and was taken into custody, and Lopez was found in a nearby field, LPD said. LPD later released the female without charges.
LPD established a perimeter and shut down a large portion of Highway 287 in an effort to find the suspects.
The two remaining suspects — one age 14 and one age 16 — were arrested later in the day, around 12:30 p.m., in Arvada, LPD said.
The three suspects face the following charges:
Lopez:
- First-degree assault on a peace officer (two counts)
- First-degree criminal trespass
- Unlawful possession of a controlled substance
- Criminal mischief — $3,000-$5,000
- Obstructing a peace officer
- Resisting arrest
- Red light violations
Juvenile males:
- Attempted first-degree criminal trespass
- First-degree assault on a peace officer (two counts)
