LONGMONT, Colo. — A Boulder County jury on Wednesday convicted a man in a 2022 fatal shooting in Longmont that left a teenager dead and a second teen wounded.
Yahir Solis, now 21, was convicted of first-degree murder and multiple counts of attempted murder, assault and illegal discharge of a firearm. His trial began May 13 in Boulder County District Court.
The shooting happened around 1:50 p.m. Aug. 20, 2022, near a basketball court at Kensington Street and St. Clair Avenue in Longmont. Solis was arrested later that same day.
Family members identified the 13-year-old victim as Zay and said he was playing basketball with his 15-year-old cousin before someone drove by and shot at them. Zay was killed, his cousin was shot in the leg, family members said.
According to court records, after his conviction, Solis was immediately sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder. He was sentenced to 48 years on two counts of attempted murder and 32 years on a third count of attempted murder. He received 24 years for the assault charge and three years for the firearms charge.
