GREELEY, Colo. — Greeley Police said Tuesday that officers arrested a man on suspicion of shooting several rounds into a home, injuring one of the residents, before being shot himself.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting Sunday evening in the 1800 block of Montview Boulevard, the Greeley Police Department said in a news release.

Officers were told that a man was trying to break into a home occupied by two adults, a man and a woman. The suspect, a 26-year-old man, was trying to kick open the door while the male resident prevented him from coming inside, according to police.

At some point during the struggle, the man fired several rounds into the house, injuring the male resident's right arm, according to the news release.

The male resident returned fire from inside the house, hitting the man in the abdomen. The man then left the home, police said.

The victim was treated for his injuries at a hospital and was released. Shortly after the shooting, the wounded suspect went to a hospital, which resulted in hospital staff calling Greeley Police to investigate, police said.

Police did not say why they think the man was trying to break into the home.

After the suspect was medically cleared at the hospital, he was taken to the Weld County jail, where he was booked on suspicion of:

  • Attempted first-degree murder - extreme indifference
  • Attempted first-degree murder after deliberation
  • Attempted first-degree burglary
  • Attempted first-degree assault
  • Felony menacing
  • Criminal mischief
