Shots fired at Englewood officers from stolen truck

The 2011 white Silverado pickup with Colorado plate 611-XVN was last seen near South Quebec Street and East Yale Avenue.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — A person in a stolen truck fired shots at pursuing officers after the driver failed to stop for those officers early Thursday morning, according to the Englewood Police Department.

Officers initially attempted a traffic stop on the stolen 2011 white Silverado pickup truck around 4:20 a.m. near South Broadway and West Bates Avenue. The vehicle had Colorado license plate number 611-XVN.

According to police, the driver refused to pull over and kept driving. Officers followed as the driver went into a neighborhood and turned on West Dartmouth Avenue. At that time, someone inside the truck fired shots at officers who were in pursuit.

The officers continued the pursuit on West Dartmouth past South Santa Fe Dive, when the person again fired shots at the officers, police said.

When the driver sped up, officers lost sight of it near South Zuni Street and West Bates Avenue. Neighboring agencies were provided a description of the vehicle, which was last spotted near South Quebec Street and East Yale Avenue.

No one was hurt in the incident, and no officers fired their weapons, Englewood Police said.

Anyone with information about the truck or those inside it should contact Englewood Police at 303-761-7410.

A similar incident unfolded earlier this month in Englewood when shots were also fired at officers by someone in a stolen car.

Late on Aug. 11, an officer spotted a red Jeep with a broken tail light and attempted a traffic stop near South Platte River Drive and West Dartmouth Avenue. According to an arrest affidavit, the driver initially pulled over but then took off. The officer followed and, a short time later, the passenger leaned out the window and fired about eight shots, the affidavit says.

According to the document, the bullet went through the windshield and hit the headrest, missing the officer by just a few inches. Two people abandoned the car nearby, and officers chased them on foot.

In that immediate area, officers recovered an AK-47 and a fully loaded AK-47 magazine. That gun was traced to an Aurora man who told police he was not aware it had been taken from his vehicle. He also told police a handgun was missing.

When police contacted the Jeep's registered owner, she reported that her son had been driving the vehicle earlier but told her he had been robbed at gunpoint.

The boy later admitted he had been driving the vehicle during the incident and identified his friend as the passenger. Both are facing charges of attempted first-degree murder of a public official, and additional charges are possible.
