ADAMS COUNTY, Colo. — An Adams County sheriff's deputy was injured and a suspect was killed in an exchange of gunfire in Sherrelwood Wednesday night, the sheriff's office said.
According to the agency, deputies responded to 85 Leona Dr. in Sherrelwood around 10:15 p.m. to contact a man who was wanted on an active warrant from the Department of Corrections.
That man, later identified as 38-year-old David Estrada, shot at deputies as they tried to contact him, according to the sheriff's office.
Adams County Sgt. Adam Sherman said Estrada was known to carry firearms.
“We were taking a lot of precautions and we waited to even approach until there was positive identification on the person,” Sherman said. “We tried the best we could to keep the situation safe and to keep the surrounding community and the neighbors safe. Unfortunately, on this one it happened quickly, and we didn’t even have the chance to try to negotiate or come up with a different type of process.”
Sherman said one deputy was struck twice and suffered minor injuries to his arm and foot. He was taken to the hospital.
"He was doing well [Wednesday] night," Sherman said. "He was completely cognizant. I had a personal conversation with him. Our leadership teams were there. His family was there. We will continue to be alongside him and his family while he works to get back into service.”
Several deputies shot at the suspect, Sherman said.
“There’s not a single officer or deputy that I know of who shows up to work in the morning hoping for a situation like what happened [Wednesday] night,” Sherman said. “We’re a part of the community and this impacts all of us in different ways. It’s important for us to give our deputies the resources and timing that they need to process something like this.”
Deputies are still investigating the shooting, but said they were not looking for anyone else involved.
