Postal workers demand protections as reports of assaults and robberies increase

Their unofficial motto covers snow and rain -- not robberies -- and mail carriers said they need the community to step up to help them.

AURORA, Colo. — No matter the weather, they'll deliver.

But postal workers in the National Association of Letter Carriers said conditions have deteriorated and enough is enough.

"This violence against our members must stop," said Brian Renfroe, the president of the association, at a rally outside Aurora's main post office Tuesday.

With chants of "enough is enough," local mail carriers said they've never seen it this bad.

"It's terrifying to hear that anybody would take a life into their hands over mail," said Bryan "OB" Sanders. "We look out for the community. So hopefully the communities will look out for us as things get crazier."

Richard Byrne, the president of the Colorado State Association of Letter Carriers, said people have assaulted or stolen from Denver-area mail carriers 10 times so far this year -- up from just twice in 2022.

In March, police said two teenage girls robbed a mail carrier at gunpoint before a shootout with Lakewood Police. Just last month, two thieves attacked a mail carrier in Aurora -- stealing mail and the key USPS uses to open apartment boxes.

"We just need accountability. We can't let attacks on federal workers just be slaps on the wrist," Byrne said. He wants suspects to face federal charges -- not state prosecution.

The postal service's unofficial motto covers rain -- not robbery. But Sanders said the threat of the latter won't stop mail carriers from delivering to the people they serve.

"We're here for our communities and we'll be here for our communities. We're not going to let anybody run us away out of this," he said.

But he and his fellow mail carriers asked for the community's help next time they see a postal worker walking down their street.

"Look out for us the way we have always looked out for you," Renfroe said.
