SHERIDAN, Colo. — A crash in Sheridan earlier this month has left a 21-year-old motorcyclist fighting for his life.
At around 9:00 p.m. on Aug. 16, Sheridan police responded to a crash on Highway 285 near the River Point Parkway. Authorities said the crash involved a car and a motorcycle with the driver leaving the scene without providing aid or information.
"It’s just sickening like I can’t imagine leaving somebody on the side of the road," Aleksandr Makarov said.
Makarov identified his brother, Sean Ayers, as the individual hurt in the crash.
"From witnesses that stopped they said that another vehicle merged in his lane and Sean tried to correct to not get hit by the car and lost control of his motorcycle, they think he hit a pole," Makarov said.
Sheridan police told 9NEWS three people helped the victim on scene. Makarov said one of them was a medical professional.
"There was a doctor that was leaving his shift that actually stopped after the accident and helped perform CPR until the ambulance got there," he explained. "We don't know where we would be if he didn't stop."
Makarov said Ayers was badly hurt. He said doctors had to remove a portion of Ayers' skull to reduce the swelling and he still hasn't woken up.
Makarov has created a GoFundMe to help offset some of the costs Ayers and his family are facing due to this incident.
"At this point we don't know what quality of life he will have after he awakens," Makarov added. "It doesn’t matter what kind of condition he comes out, this is going to affect him for the rest of his life and we just don’t know what that’s going to look like."
Sheridan Police Chief Jeffrey Martinez said the case is a high priority for the department. He stresses if anyone witnessed the incident or has any information about the driver involved, they're encouraged to reach out to Detective Gerlach at 303-438-3243.
Makarov hopes the driver comes forward.
"Take responsibility for what you have done," he continued. "Turn yourself in and let's get this chapter over and hopefully everybody heals and we can all move on with our lives."
