A man who police say allegedly admitted to smoking crystal meth before a hit-and-run crash that killed a motorcyclist last weekend was formally charged for the crime on Thursday.

Just after midnight on April 28, police say Jonathan Ortiz, 39, allegedly hit a motorcyclist at Interstate 25 and the Interstate 70 northbound ramp.

Ortiz then ditched his truck, according to police, but was later found in the area of 47th Avenue and York Street.

At that time, police noticed signs of impairment, like “loud speech that made no sense,” and a chemical odor to his breath, along with blood shot eyes.

Ortiz later told officers that he smoked crystal meth prior to the crash, Denver Police said.

The 53-year-old victim was taken to the hospital, and died a short time later, Denver Police said.

Ortiz faces multiple charges for vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident involving death.

He's scheduled to appear in court for his second advisement on May 7 at 8:30 a.m.
