Suspect in fatal Westminster shooting turns himself into authorities

Police were in the area of 62nd Avenue and Estes Street in Arvada searching for the suspect, who was not found.

ARVADA, Colo. — A suspect turned himself into authorities late Sunday after an all-day search following a fatal shooting in Westminster, police said.

Westminster Police said the shooting happened just before 10 a.m. in the 9800 block of Westcliff Parkway. They said the person who called 911 reported that two men were fighting, and one of them had shot the other. The victim was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not yet been released.

Police said the victim and suspect knew each other. The suspect left the scene in a car, which police later found in the area of 62nd Avenue and Estes Street in Arvada. They asked residents to stay indoors for several hours Sunday as they investigated in that area.

Police got a warrant and searched an apartment, but did not find the suspect inside. Around 7:30 p.m., Arvada police said the shelter-in-place was lifted, but it all left neighbors very worried.

About 11 p.m. Sunday, the suspect, identified as Gilberth Alexis Gomez Arias, 22, turned himself into the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office, police said on Monday.

After waking up to sirens Sunday morning, Michelle Read and Michael Zur didn’t know what was happening in their backyard most of the day.

“We went to go get ourselves coffee and the first thing we saw was a police officer putting SWAT gear on and body armor, all that good stuff,” Michael Zur said.

“We have the bomb squad over there and it’s kind of frightening to not know why is the bomb squad here,” Michelle Read said.

Read had to ask police to even grab something from her car Sunday morning.

“I haven’t gotten any phone alerts or anything,” Read said. “We are not sure what’s going on. It’s very confusing to have numerous police cars all over the neighborhood.”

“There’s cops blocking down the areas way down the road over there,” Zur said. “Whomever it is, I hope they catch them, and bring them to justice."

Arias was being held on suspicion of:

  • First-degree murder
  • Felony menacing
