AURORA, Colo. — Police said two suspects wanted for a break-in at a school in Aurora turned themselves in. Aurora West College Preparatory Academy was broken into and heavily damaged during the break-in which occurred late Monday night on April 22.
The two suspects are under the age of 18 and their names were not released by police.
Aurora Police shared photos two days after the break-in of the suspects they said broke into the school around 11 p.m. Monday.
The damage was discovered around 5 a.m. Tuesday when police responded to the 6-12 public school for a report of a break-in. Aurora Public Schools said the damage was "significant" and as a result the school was closed Tuesday for cleaning. It reopened on Wednesday.
Police shared photos of the suspects and asked the public to help identify them. In one of the photos, one of the suspects appeared to be carrying a large rock.
On Thursday, police said they had received numerous tips and that they had positively identified both of the people in the photos. The photos have since been taken down from APD's social media accounts and from the 9NEWS website since the suspects are juveniles.
Photos released of the damage show that several glass display cases that lined a hallway were shattered. Shards of glass littered the floors.
Investigators arrested the suspects on suspicion of second-degree burglary and criminal mischief of $20,000-$100,000, both felonies, and misdemeanor criminal mischief of $300-$1,000. The Arapahoe County District Attorney's Office will determine the final formal charges.
