Officers shoot man stabbing dad, police say

Dispatch audio said a parent reported their son was having a "psychotic event," and pushed the parent down the stairs.

LAFAYETTE, Colo. — Lafayette police say officers shot a man while he was stabbing his father early Sunday morning.

Officers responded around 2:45 a.m. to a reported disturbance involving the father and son in the 2400 block of Waneka Lake Trail. When officers arrived, they saw the suspect stabbing his father with knives, police said. They tried to get the suspect to stop before determining they had to shoot the suspect.

"When our officers arrived we observed a suspect actively stabbing another male," Lafayette Police Deputy Chief Brian Rosipajla said. "It turned out to be a son stabbing their father."

Rosipajla said officers had to engage in the situation and ended up shooting the son. The shooting happened less than five minutes after the 911 call came in.

Dispatch audio said a parent reported their son was having a "psychotic event," and pushed the parent down the stairs.

The suspect and victim were taken to the hospital, and the extent of their injuries was not immediately known. No officers were injured.

Two officers who fired their guns are being placed on administrative leave, which police said is standard protocol.

Criminal charges will be recommended to the district attorney's office when the suspect is released from the hospital, police said.

The shooting is being investigated by the Boulder County Critical Incident Response Team.
