Domestic violence suspect killed in shooting involving officers in Commerce City

Commerce City Police said James Houllis was wanted in connection with a domestic violence assault that had happened earlier in the day.

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — An armed man was shot and killed in a shooting involving officers after a standoff that lasted for hours Friday. 

The Commerce City Police Department said James Houllis, 26, was wanted on two warrants as well as for a domestic violence assault that had happened earlier in the day barricaded himself inside a home near East 72nd Avenue and Niagara Street at around 2 p.m. Friday.

Police said Houllis, who was armed with a knife and a handgun, had attacked a woman who had to be taken to the hospital with serious injuries. He held a maintenance worker hostage inside the home and refused to comply with officers' commands to come out, according to police.

The maintenance worker was able to escape on his own about 30 minutes after the standoff began, police said, but Houllis continued to refuse orders to surrender and repeatedly threatened to shoot police officers after hours of speaking with police negotiators. Police said Houllis also threatened to blow up the apartment complex.

After nearly five hours police shot the suspect, who died at the scene. 

The 17th Judicial District's Critical Incident Response Team will investigate the shooting. 

Two officers who fired their weapons, one from Commerce City Police Department and one from Brighton Police Department, were placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
